Occupying an exceptional position overlooking the mouth of the River Dart, Sanderling presented a rare opportunity to transform an existing property into a contemporary coastal home while retaining much of the original building fabric.

The client's ambition was to create a home that felt entirely new without the environmental and financial cost of complete demolition. Achieving this required a careful balance between refurbishment, extension and structural alteration, together with a construction strategy that could be delivered in carefully managed phases.

Our design reimagines the house around its spectacular setting. Existing spaces were opened up, new extensions introduced and generous areas of glazing carefully positioned to frame panoramic views across the estuary. Contemporary detailing and a restrained palette of natural materials complement the traditional form of the house, creating a home that feels both timeless and distinctive.

Delivered in close collaboration with Manor Building Company and Ryall Structural Engineers, Sanderling demonstrates how thoughtful architecture can unlock the full potential of an existing property, creating a modern family home that is deeply connected to its extraordinary landscape.
